The Egg Tempera Paintings of Alex Garcia

On My Easel – Egg Tempera – April 13

2010-04-13

My painting process involves a constant refinement of edges, shapes, color, light and dark. At this stage I am also concerned with the surface and how the interweaving of various colors (warm and cool, transparent and translucent) can work together to create a wonderful egg tempera tapestry. This is one of the aspects of egg tempera which I love the most because the painting can be enjoyed up close but also as you step away from the painting. The many strands of egg tempera color that appear distinct and clearly marked up close, slowly melt together as you step away from the painting. The optical mixing of those individual strands of color create an effect not too unlike the technique of the impressionists, albeit more subtle.
