When the madness fades and the waves of life settle
The heart returns to that which the mind forces it to forget
The mind has a way of convincing you that your heart should not be listened to
That it is untrustworthy of declaring importance and honor on things that it holds dear
But when the mind is settled and calm it gives way to the relentless passion of the heart
The heart knows what it wants and it longs with ardent passion to pursue it’s longing in spite of the mind’s arguments
What is one to do but let the heart be happy and satisfied
Pursue what you know with your heart not what you know with your mind for your heart knowledge is true knowledge
True knowledge about you as a person
What does my heart knowledge tell me?

New Work in Progress – Egg Tempera

This is a new painting I am working on that is 16×20. At this stage what you see is the ink under painting. This stage is critical for me because it helps establish the light and dark relationships. N.C. Wyeth always advocated for a highly finished under painting because he felt it added a solidity to the painting. I agree.

I have begun work on the shirt. I am using india ink to model the folds. This is a critical stage because it establishes the dark and light relationships that will show through the egg tempera layer.

I have refined the face to a point where I now feel comfortable moving on to the shirt. Once the shirt is blocked in I will come back to the face and refine it further.

At this session I was concerned with the left eye so I worked up that side of his face with some darker values. In the next session I intend to knock down those values a bit and refine that area even further. Once I refine the mouth and nose area a bit more I will tackle the shirt. I have been reluctant to jump into the shirt because I want to approach it differently this time with some other technical ideas I have in mind.

This was as shorter session but hopefully the next one will provide more time to really get into some good refinements. Thanks for watching.
