Home Music Studio Tips

When creating a home studio choose the best room considering factors such as space and noise. For a beginner, you do not have to buy expensive equipment, start small.

The most important thing is getting the best quality music sound from microphone positioning to room treatment and other techniques. Here are some of the best tips for a home music studio:

Soundproofing

Installing soundproof material in your studio is essential to prevent sound from reaching the neighbors. Soundproofing keeps external noise from entering the studio and distracting your recording. It also blocks inside sounds such as computer sounds.

In addition to soundproofing your walls, doors, and windows you can fill in the possible small spaces available. Another way is to place mixing desks and monitors against the walls facing the neighbors to prevent noise from escaping. Add mass to your doors using an adhesive vinyl material.

Monitor Placement

The quality of your music will be determined by the placement of monitors. The speakers should be at least 15 inches away from the wall and corners. Create a stereo image by moving the speakers far apart.

Get someone to slowly adjust them as you listen to the sound they produce. Find a tight spot and where the instruments are separated properly. Speakers close to each other will affect the sound by making it narrow. When they are too far the middle is like to drop making it lose.

Put Away Noisy Equipment

For the production of good music, the studio has to be sound free. In a studio that has no soundproof, you need to banish all equipment that can cause noise. Turn off the air conditioner when you are recording.

Make sure your room is far from the refrigerator or you might want to move it to a different location. You can also unplug the fridge and when plug it in when you are done with the session. You need to set your hard drives away from the studio to prevent internal noise. If the noise doesn’t stop you can place a blanket on top of them to prevent sound from escaping.

Treat Your Room

Studio treatment includes using absorbers, foam kits, diffusers, and bass straps. Acoustic treatment mainly focuses on reflected and direct sound. Add absorbers and diffusers until your sound is decent.

Foam kits are used to tame mid and high frequencies. Make sure you know the quality of the kits before buying. Diffusers are meant to prevent standing waves and affect high frequencies only. Bass traps are used to rectify low-end frequency issues.
